EH Bildu warns against using anti-terrorism measures to target ethnic profiles and limit freedom of expression
In a meeting convened by the Ministry of Interior to discuss the level of anti-terrorism alert in Spain, EH Bildu deputy Jon Iñarritu cautioned Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska that the country’s anti-terrorism measures should not be used as an excuse to increase controls on ethnic profiles or restrict freedom of expression and the prohibition of symbols.
«The security cannot be an excuse,» emphasized Iñarritu in a social media post, as reported by Europa Press. He also called for measures to prevent racist attacks and exclusionary messages.
Meanwhile, Minister Grande-Marlaska expressed satisfaction with the «cordial and constructive atmosphere» of the meeting with representatives from all parliamentary groups, which was characterized by consensus.
During a press conference following the meeting, Grande-Marlaska appealed to the sense of state and urged against confusing the fight against terrorism with irregular immigration. «It is very dangerous,» he warned, while asking for trust in the work carried out by the State Security Forces and Corps to monitor and identify any potential threats to security.
