Tragedy Strikes at Air Show in Villa Cañas, Argentina
Pilot and Passenger Killed as Aircraft Crashes
An air show taking place over the weekend in the town of Villa Cañas, located in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina, ended in tragedy when one of the participating aircraft plummeted to the ground. The pilot and their companion, both on board a military L-29 Delfin plane, tragically lost their lives in the accident.
The incident was confirmed by municipal sources, firefighters, and the local aeroclub, all of whom expressed their shock and sorrow over the events that unfolded in the city, situated 180 kilometers from Rosario and 370 kilometers from the provincial capital.
«This incident has cast a shadow over the entire region. It is a devastating blow for the entire Villa Cañas aeroclub community,» stated Mayor Norberto Gizzi.
When asked about the cause of the incident, aeroclub sources explained, «The plane was performing a low flyover and, as it was pulling away and making a turn, it suddenly nosedived. There were two individuals on board the aircraft, which is a military-type plane. It is a Russian aircraft with a pilot and a passenger in the back.»
The L-29 Delfin was one of the main attractions of the air show, as promoted by its organizers. This model is a military training aircraft that was designed in the 1960s during the height of the Cold War. It was the first aircraft manufactured in Czechoslovakia and used by the Eastern Bloc countries following the Warsaw Pact.
They were in service from 1966 to 1977, and after being retired as trainers, they were acquired by various air forces before eventually ending up in private hands. Currently, there are approximately 50 L-29 aircraft remaining in the world, and the one that crashed in the province of Santa Fe on Sunday was the only one in South America. It had been purchased by a businessman from Carlos Casares, located in the Buenos Aires province, from California, United States, and brought to Argentina.
This tragic incident has left the aviation community and the town of Villa Cañas in mourning. Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, as authorities seek to determine the factors that led to this devastating accident.
