Nov. 21 (UPI) — The Israeli government is considering a tentative agreement with Hamas, in a series of emergency cabinet meetings on Tuesday, to release some of the hostages held by militants in Gaza in exchange for a temporary cease-fire, said a senior U.S. official and a source familiar with the talks, according to NBC and CBS.
The tentative agreement, according to the sources, includes the exchange of around 50 women and children in phases for about 150 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. It would also include a four to five-day pause in fighting, multiple sources told NBC, CBS, and CNN, adding that while the agreement has not been approved, those figures could change.
«We are making progress. I don’t think it’s worth saying too much, not even at this moment, but I hope there will be good news soon,» Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reservists on Tuesday.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, a total of 236 Israelis, including 40 children, remain captive in Gaza. Over 12,500 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis have been killed, according to the IDF and the Palestinian health authority, both in Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 and the subsequent Israeli operation.
Prior to Tuesday’s cabinet meetings, Netanyahu released a video statement, stating that he and the security forces support the Hamas agreement.
«We have before us tonight a difficult decision, but it is the right decision: all the security forces fully support it,» Netanyahu said. «They understood that the military effort would not only not harm, but on the contrary: it would allow the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the continuation of the fighting.»
Netanyahu added that any agreement would not end Israel’s war against Hamas.
«I would like to make it clear once again: the war continues, the war will continue until we achieve all our goals: eliminating Hamas, returning all our hostages, ensuring that the day after Hamas, Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel, there will be no element in it that supports terrorism, that educates its children in terrorism, and that threatens the State of Israel,» Netanyahu said.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke for the second time on Tuesday with his Israeli counterpart, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who emphasized that despite any short-term cease-fire, the security forces must continue to pressure Hamas.
«I understand how important this is,» Gallant said. «In addition to that, without pressure and continuity, there will be no possibility of bringing in the next teams we want to bring.»
Former CIA Director John Brennan agreed and warned that Israel must be prepared for «radical extremist elements» in Gaza to undermine any cease-fire agreement.
Israel’s war and security cabinet meetings began on Tuesday as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh confirmed that the militant group was nearing a truce with Israel to temporarily halt the fighting in Gaza.
