Deauville to Host First «Deauville Sport Doc Festival» in April 2024

The city of Deauville will host the first «Deauville Sport Doc Festival» from April 3rd to 5th, 2024. This festival aims to promote and showcase a rapidly developing and particularly exciting audiovisual genre for the sports ecosystem.
The festival, inspired by the recent global success of documentaries and docuseries, as well as the proliferation of audiovisual formats related to sports, is a natural choice, according to Roland Giscard d’Estaing, the festival’s president. «The educational and pedagogical power of sports no longer needs to be proven,» he continues. «For this reason, the Deauville Sport Doc Festival is part of a current dynamic that aims to make sports an accelerator of social progress.»
The sports documentary offers a unique perspective on sports, with a storytelling approach different from live events or press coverage. It allows viewers to delve into the complex world of elite sports and discover human stories of personal and collective commitment, reflecting our society.
The Deauville Sport Doc Festival will involve all the sports broadcasters in France that make up the Editorial Committee. The festival will be open to the general public and will host a professional market that will bring together various stakeholders such as producers, directors, buyers, and broadcasters. Stéphane Meunier («Les Yeux dans les Bleus») will preside over a jury composed of eight personalities, including documentary professionals and athletes, who will award traditional prizes (original creation, storytelling, direction, etc.), as well as prizes related to social contribution (impact, role model, commitment, etc.).
An ambitious event is coming to life thanks to the support of prestigious partners: the city of Deauville, Lacoste, the Barrière Group, Canal+, the Normandy Region, Elle, and the l’Équipe Group.
Catherine Spindler, CEO of Lacoste, premium partner of the event: «Lacoste’s DNA is anchored in sports and its power to transcend differences and unite around solid values. It was natural for us to support this event that celebrates sports documentaries, for which a festival takes on its full meaning, in a context where this genre continues to grow in scale and appeal.»
Thomas Sénécal, Sports Director of the CANAL+ Group and media partner of the Festival: «We are delighted to support the first edition of the Deauville Sport Doc Festival. Documentaries are at the heart of our editorial offering and aim to immerse our subscribers in the fascinating world of sports competitions. We are giving great impetus to this field in collaboration with Christine Cauquelin (Director of Documentaries at the CANAL+ Group). Like a sports event, a fiction series, or a film, sports documentaries are a powerful vector of emotions that captivate our subscribers. I am convinced that this festival will highlight the vibrancy and creativity of this content.»
Philippe Augier, Mayor of Deauville, is pleased that the first sports documentary festival has chosen to permanently settle in Deauville: «The Deauville Sport Doc Festival represents a new opportunity for the city to demonstrate its dynamism. It is a city open to the world, at the forefront of culture, sports, and media. We prioritize sports for the city because it is now a place for transmitting core values. Moreover, Deauville, with its hotel infrastructure and the CID (Congress Center), offers an ideal location to accommodate this rapidly expanding market.»
