Using your Samsung Galaxy as a webcam is something that should have happened three years ago

Samsung has recently announced a collaboration with Microsoft that brings a range of benefits to Galaxy device users. One of the most significant advantages is the ability to use your Galaxy S24 as a webcam for video calls on platforms like Teams and other apps.
During its CES 2024 conference, Samsung unveiled a host of exciting updates that will be introduced across its product lines. While mobile phones usually have a separate event, the South Korean tech giant often provides a sneak peek at some of the advancements in the early weeks of the year. This time, the focus is on artificial intelligence and its integration into Samsung devices.
As part of their partnership with Microsoft, Samsung has confirmed that Galaxy smartphones can now be used as webcams on Windows computers. Users will have the option to choose between the main or front camera and apply AI-powered effects such as background blur or auto framing.
«In today’s work environment, video calls have become increasingly important, so we wanted to leverage the powerful cameras on our smartphones to enhance virtual meetings,» said Jonathan Gabrio, director of Samsung’s connected experience center. «Starting with our flagship models later this year, people will be able to utilize the exceptional clarity and resolution of their Galaxy smartphone cameras to enhance their Microsoft Teams meetings.»
Gabrio also mentioned that this feature will be available on flagship models launching in 2024, including the Galaxy S24. However, it remains uncertain whether this new functionality will be extended to previous or lower-range models. It’s worth noting that even a Galaxy A54 or Galaxy M offers better camera quality than many premium Chinese webcams available on platforms like Amazon.
The Demand for Webcams: A Feature That Should Have Arrived Sooner
The ability to use your mobile phone as a webcam is a highly sought-after feature that many users will find incredibly useful. The good news is that it can now be done easily and without the need for additional applications. However, the bad news is that this functionality has arrived a little late to the party.
In 2020, the demand for webcams reached an all-time high due to the pandemic and the widespread adoption of remote work. Some users opted to pay a premium for webcams like the Logitech C920, while others found temporary solutions by using apps like EpocCam or DroidCam with their mobile devices. Although these Android apps didn’t offer all the features currently advertised, they provided a workaround for video calls.
Now, three years later, as the world adjusts to the new normal, the demand for webcams has stabilized. Interestingly, manufacturers like Google and Samsung have recognized the importance of using mobile phones as webcams. While Google already offers this option in Android 14 for Pixel devices, Samsung will be introducing it in their high-end range in the coming months.
More details about this feature may be revealed during the Galaxy S24 presentation, scheduled for January 17th. Alongside the announcement of new hardware in their next flagship lineup, Samsung will also showcase advancements in artificial intelligence resulting from their collaboration with Microsoft.
