Apple’s iPhone 15 to Transition to USB-C, Leaving Lightning Behind
During the “Wonderlust” event last Tuesday, Apple announced the transition of the iPhone 15 to USB-C, abandoning the Lightning port and all accessories that use it. One of the most iconic accessories, which were even included for free with iPhones until a few years ago, are the EarPods (not AirPods).
The EarPods are Apple’s famous wired headphones. They initially came with a 3.5mm connector, and later switched to Lightning. Now, in order to be compatible with the iPhone 15, they have a USB-C version, and apparently support lossless music.
An Impressive Deal for the Price
According to MacOtakara, they have been able to test these new wired headphones, and the results have been surprising. They concluded that the USB-C EarPods support audio ranging from 16bit/44.1kHz to 24bit/48kHz. In other words, they can handle the lossless audio offered by Apple Music:
When I connected the EarPods (USB-C) to my MacBook Air (M1, 2020) and checked the Audio MIDI settings, the EarPods (USB-C) were at 16bit/44.1kHz to 24bit. I was able to confirm that it is equipped with a DAC that supports 48kHz.
Apple Music’s lossless audio is “lossless: maximum resolution 24bit/48kHz” and “high-resolution lossless: maximum resolution 24bit/192kHz,” so the EarPods (USB-C) are lossless. I was able to confirm that they are compatible.
Apple didn’t mention anything about this during the event, but it is undoubtedly one of the major changes of the year. Being able to purchase headphones compatible with lossless music for less than 20 euros is a great deal. They will have to be tested, but they look very promising.
