Wang Nianhao: A Capable Slugger with Room for Improvement
The U18 2023 World Cup officially concluded yesterday. From the preliminaries to the semifinals, the Chinese team advanced to the championship with a complete victory. However, they lost to Japan by just one point in the final, settling for the runner-up position. This marks the second consecutive U18 tournament with an equal result. This time, the Chinese team had five “quasi” professional players in their lineup. These players entered the mid-season draft and earned the favor of secondary professional teams before participating in the U18 competition. All of them turned out to be field players, including Wang Nianhao from Fubon Warriors, Lin Jiawei from the unified Lions, Qiu Xin from Lotte Peach Monkey, Li Xunjie, and Hu Mengzhi. Wang Nianhao, who joined the Fubon Titans as the “second pick,” has just graduated from Beijing University of Science and Technology this year. He is considered the most capable slugger in this year’s youth baseball team. There were rumors during the draft that Taipei Steel would give up on Lin Ziwei and choose Wang Nianhao instead. Although he didn’t become the number one pick in the end, Fubon chose him as the second pick and offered him a contract worth 7.3 million. This amount also broke the jointly held record for high school outfielders by Lin Zihao and Zeng Ziyou.
In this U18 edition, Wang Nianhao was selected by coach Wu Baihong to be the starting third baseman in nine games, a significant change from last year when he played five bases and defended first base. Taking on the role of captain comes with even greater responsibilities. Looking at his batting average of 0.250, one might think that Wang Nianhao’s performance was average. However, he played quite well, especially with his powerful hits. In the game against the previous champion, the United States, he had a “game-changing” performance. His two-run key hit broke the tie and scored all the points for the team. He ended up with six RBIs. When opponents faced him, they would likely throw more fastballs, which allowed Wang Nianhao to earn many walks. It’s a pity that after the game against the United States, Wang Nianhao’s touch cooled down a bit. In the following four games, he only had one hit in nine at-bats and also struck out four times. Compared to his success with hitting change-ups, his swing rate was higher, which is something he will have to overcome in the future.
As for the defensive aspect, I have to say that Wang Nianhao is good at defending third base. He is much better than I originally expected. Whether moving forward, laterally, or catching fly balls, he doesn’t have any problems. His reaction time is truly impressive. There was a farewell trick against the United States and another against Japan. After being hit by a power ball in “the most painful part of a man,” he was able to endure the pain, handle the ball, and complete the play. It truly impressed me. Although it was said that in the championship game, Wang Nian made a mistake while throwing to first base, leading to Japan’s advantage, it was mainly because the pitcher immediately tried to run to stop the ball, which made Wang Nian anxious. He stopped the car, only to realize that he hadn’t stopped me, so he hurried to pick it up and made a mistake in his haste. Overall, I won’t disregard Wang Nianhao’s contribution just because of that one throw. I believe that his performance, both offensively and defensively, exceeded the standard this time, and even on the defensive side, he surpassed my expectations. This makes me even more confident that he will quickly adapt to professional baseball in the future.
Lin Jiawei: A Young Talent Worth Watching
The second player, ranked 1-3, closely following Wang Nianhao, is Lin Jiawei, also known as the “Third Flower,” who was selected by the Uni-President Lions. Lin Jiawei graduated from Gubao Family Business and was a five-time outfielder in the eyes of talent scouts. He was once considered to have potential overseas but decided before the secondary vocational draft this year and submitted the registration form. The selection process also revealed that some felt Lin Jiawei resembled a younger version of Zhang Zhihao, making his future worth anticipating.
In this year’s U18 tournament, Lin Jiawei, like last time, played on both ends of the field. However, while he started a game last time, this time he only came on as a reliever for 0.1 inning, simply taking over the game due to the score. The focus is still on the outfielder’s work. In the previous season, Lin Jiawei mainly played as a center fielder in the fourth lineup. This season, he moved to right field and played in the third lineup in the early stages of the game.
