Sony Achieves Record Revenue in Fiscal Q2

Sony has reported its quarterly results for the second quarter of its fiscal year (July-September 2023), recording the highest revenue in its history.

PlayStation 5 Sales Soar

During this three-month period, Sony distributed 4.9 million PlayStation 5 consoles to stores, surpassing the previous year’s quarter by 1.6 million units, representing a 48% increase. Since its launch, the total number of PlayStation 5 consoles sold has exceeded 46.6 million.

The company remains committed to distributing 25 million consoles throughout the fiscal year, with 8.2 million units already sold in the first half.

Strong Game Sales

In addition to the impressive console sales, Sony sold a total of 67.6 million PS4 and PS5 games during the quarter, an increase of 5.1 million compared to the previous year. Of these, 4.7 million were first-party games, a decrease of 1.9 million compared to 2022.

The video game division generated a total revenue of 954,096 million yen (approximately 6,600 million dollars), a 32.38% increase compared to the same period in 2022. The division’s profits also rose by 16.16% to 48.9 billion yen.

This fiscal Q2 marks the highest revenue ever achieved by Sony’s video game division, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. However, profits were slightly lower compared to recent years.

PlayStation Plus Subscribers and Monthly Active Users

Sony has chosen not to disclose the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers for the second consecutive quarter. The last known figure was 47.4 million as of March 31, 2023. However, the company did highlight an increase in monthly active users, reaching 107 million compared to 102 million in the same period of the previous year.
