Starfield: The Challenges and Discarded Plans Revealed by Director Todd Howard

Director Todd Howard recently discussed the challenges faced during the development of Starfield in an interview with The Washington Post.
The Impact of COVID-19 and the Delayed Release Date
One of the most significant obstacles encountered was the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the original release date of November 2022. Howard explained, “As things progressed, we realized that we needed more time. When you consider the scale of this game, that extra time turned out to be quite substantial.”
Ultimately, the decision to postpone the launch to September 2023 proved to be the right move. Howard acknowledged that they had “hundreds of plans” for Starfield, but many of them had to be abandoned. “We had to rewrite parts of the engine and develop new technology to create the planetary and outer space elements within our game engine,” he revealed.
Washington from Fallout 3 Makes an Appearance in Starfield
Bethesda initially intended to include a recreation of Washington D.C. from Fallout 3 in Starfield. While this idea didn’t come to fruition, there may still be references to the Fallout franchise within the space RPG. The possibility of connecting both IPs was considered, suggesting a potential sequel to the Fallout saga.
Despite the challenges faced and the discarded plans, Starfield remains highly anticipated by fans. Bethesda’s expertise in certain aspects of game development is evident, although some new elements have proven to be less polished.
